Our History

Established in 1969, Nenagh Credit Union is proud of its heritage and continues to be governed by our members and voluntary Board of Directors.

1969

On 31st March 1969, a meeting was held to found Nenagh Credit Union, 75 people were in attendance. Board of Directors consisting of 15 people and a Supervisory Committee consisting of 3 people were elected.

1969

The newly elected Board of Directors held their first meeting on 2nd April. The Executive of the Board and a Credit Committee were appointed. The initial venue for the collection of member’s monies was ‘The Institute’ in Friar Street.

1970

On 16th July 1970, the First Annual General Meeting took place. Membership at this point was 290 members

1971

In March 1971 the collection point was transferred to the Legion Hall (now Loreto House) in Kenyon Street

1978

Nenagh Credit Union purchased premises in Silver Street.

1980

On 17th October 1980, the renovated premises in Silver Street were officially opened for business.

1985

Following the growth in membership and expansion of services, Joan Hynes was appointed as the first official Manager of Nenagh Credit Union

1987

Members savings grew to £1 million

1991

At the Annual Conference of the Irish League of Credit Unions, Nenagh Credit Union was awarded the Credit Union Cup in recognition of it being to the forefront in promoting the aims, ideals and philosophy of the Credit Union Movement.

1995

The premises in Silver Street were deemed no longer adequate. Consequently, the current premises at Kickham Street were purchased.

1996

On 18th March 1996, the extensively restored and redeveloped premises at Kickham Street were officially opened by the then Úachtaran na hEireann, Mrs Mary Robinson.

2009

Nenagh Credit Union celebrated their 40th Anniversary. Members’ savings had grown to in excess of €40 million.

2015

On 23rd May 2015 refurbished offices are officially re-opened by Fiona Bonfield, Cathaoirleach Nenagh Municipal District and Daryl McCormack. The credit union’s IT system was upgraded to allow for the addition of further services.

2018

Each member account was assigned their own individual international bank account number (IBAN).  First SEPA electronic payments sent from the credit union to another financial institution.  First SEPA direct debit loan repayment received.

2019

Nenagh Credit Union celebrated their 50th anniversary. Members savings have grown to more than €54 million

2021

First current account opened, offering members full suite of current account benefits.  Lowest monthly charge on the market at €4 per month.

2025

First SEPA Instant payment received during January. Developments on the way to send SEPA Instant payments later in the year.
